Dear Editor,
Life is really strange in Guyana. Over the years I’ve penned numerous letters about Zeelugt on the East Bank of Essequibo citing the various problems and imploring help for that village. Under the previous administration, no one and no organisation bothered to offer any assistance. We have a new administration and to date no one seems to care for that village. School drop-outs, drug usage, crimes and suicides are some of the problems that are still prevalent. I keep mentioning Zeelugt because a lot of talented/educated minds emanate from there, but I believe that it is one of the most troubled villages in this country.
Many overseas based Guyanese could be seen trying to invest here because of the change of government, but they only seem interested in profit. The parking meters fiasco is a living example. The reason I say this is to inform the public that two more young men committed suicide over the past two days. On Tuesday one of them succumbed after spending a few days in hospital after ingesting poison.
On Wednesday morning the village heard that another one had hanged himself during Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. We all will speculate and just dismiss these incidents after a few days, but in the meantime, lives are gone and if no offers help to this village, the problems affecting it will continue.
Yours faithfully,
Sahadeo Bates
