A father will come up against his son today in the men’s doubles final of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) Open badminton tournament at the National Gymnasium.
Today’s men’s doubles final will pit top player Narayan Ramdhani and partner Jonathan Mangra against Narayan’s father Gokarn Ramdhani and his partner Nicholas Ali.
The elder Ramdhani used to be a fairly decent badminton player before he took up the position of president of the Guyana Badminton Association.
He will look to turn back the hands of Father Time when he teams up with Ali to face Narayan Ramdhani, the country’s number one player and his partner Mangra.
The Ramdhani/Ali pairing will be brimming with confidence after their thrilling win Friday last over Darrell Carpenay & Marlon Chung: 13-21, 22-20, 21-13 in the semi-finals while the younger Ramdhani and Mangra had a fairly routine 21-15, 21-18 win over Ronald Chang Yuen and Avinash Oudit.
On Friday, Priyanna Ramdhani and Ambika Ramraj won the first final of the tournament defeating Ayanna Watson & Emelia Ramdhani, 21-7, 21-12.
In the mixed doubles quarter-final, Cecil and Kara Abrams defeated Gokarn Ramdhani and Emelia Ramdhani: 21-12, 19-21, 21-16 while Narayan and Priyanna Ramdhani defeated Darrell Carpenay and Ayanna Watson, 21-5, 21-12 in the mixed doubles semi-final.
In today’s mixed doubles semi-final, Jonathan Mangra & Ambika Ramraj will play Cecil Abrams & Kara Abrams and the winner will play Narayan Ramdhani & Priyanna Ramdhani in the final.
