The Head of the Delegation of the European Union (EU) to Guyana, Ambassador Jernej Videtič on Monday said that the EU’s member states stand ready to launch negotiations swiftly with the United Kingdom regarding the terms and conditions of its withdrawal from the union.
Ambassador Videtič, in expressing the EU’s regrets at the decision, which has seen Prime Minister David Cameron announcing his departure by October 1st, said it respects it.
“This is an unprecedented situation but we are united in our response. We will stand strong and uphold EU’s core values of promoting peace and the wellbeing of its peoples. The union of 27 Member States will continue,” the Ambassador declared.
The Ambassador, who was at the time speaking at the handing over of EU funding to Guyana at the Marriott Hotel, said the union’s relationship with Guyana and the Caribbean Community shall remain a strong and mutually beneficial.
Minister Winston Jordan, who said the UK’s vote to exit the union creates uncertainty, fear and distress, said he was heartened by the ambassador’s remarks.
