Haifeng Su Fide rated 1775 and FIDE Candidate Master Taffin Khan (1861) with the maximum three points lead the point’s standings of the seven round Andrew Arts Memorial tournament following play last weekend at the National Resource Centre, Woolford Avenue.
Su created a major upset defeating Candidate Master Anthony Drayton, FIDE ranking of 1947 in their third round clash after getting past veteran player Errol Tiwari in
the first round.
Also scoring an upset win was Joshua Pedro who outplayed Woman Candidate Master Maria Varona-Thomas in their second round clash.
Pedro, Drayton, Rashard Hussain, Saeed Ali, Frankie Farley and Tiwari each have two points while Varona-Thomas, Roberto Neto, Ryan Singh, Jason Willis, Sheriffa Ali and Ryan Goliath are on one point each.
Jessica Callender is yet to score.
Some 15 players are competing in the FIDE-rated Swiss system tournament where rating points are at stake.
The final four rounds will be played this weekend at the National Resource Center.
