A 35-year-old man accused of verbally abusing his mother and threatening her over the seizure of a phone from his little sister was placed on a bond to keep the peace when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Ronald Fariah of Lot 80, David Street, Kitty appeared before Magistrate Alex Moore and was placed on a year-long bond to keep the peace after being found guilty of using abusive language and displaying aggressive behaviour towards his mother, Marlene Fariah.
The court was told that the charge stemmed from an incident where Marlene restricted her daughter from using a cellular phone while she did her schoolwork.
Ronald had purchased the device for his little sister. According to him, he was just trying to get back the device as his mother had no right to take away something he purchased.
The court was told that Ronald entered the home in the early hours of the morning to collect his belongings as he was moving out due to the conflict with his mother.
Marlene said that upon entering the home, Ronald cursed her repeatedly.
He then proceeded to kick down her door and even attempted to hit her. She was rescued by the defendant’s stepfather, who corroborated her story to the court.
The virtual complainant expressed fear at her son’s presence in the home she shares with him and other relatives, citing his history of being a “troublemaker.”
She said that even his sister, niece, and her grandchildren are afraid of him. The court was told that there was a previous conflict between Ronald and his brother, after the brother allegedly pointed a knife at him in self-defence. Marlene said she simply wants Ronald out of the house.
After hearing the statements, Magistrate Moore placed Ronald on a one-year bond to keep the peace. Failure to uphold the agreement will result in four weeks imprisonment. The magistrate also ordered that the defendant collect his belongings from the home with a police escort to ensure that there is no conflict.
