The Guyana Police Force has not yet been unable to identify the body that was found in the aftermath of a house fire at Wales, West Bank Demerara on Thursday morning.
The body was burnt beyond recognition. It was speculated that the deceased may have been a vagrant who was squatting at the property.
Last night, Compton Sparman, Guyana Fire Service Operations Manager, said that based on the uncertainties surrounding the discovery of the body, the police force was called in to conduct its own investigations, especially since foul play is suspected.
The house was supposed to be unoccupied at the time of the fire, which homeowner Elizabeth Sattaur believes is electrical in origin based on accounts given to her by neighbours.
Sattaur had said neighbours told her there was a power outage and when the current returned, the utility post with the power line to her home was sparking.
The Guyana Fire Service, according to Sparman, is still investigating and is working on a number of theories. He stated that it is yet to receive several statements from eyewitnesses.
Sparman noted that grillwork on the house may be the reason why the person that was found was unable to escape from the building.
Sattaur pointed out that she would normally occupy the home on weekends.
The house was used as a vacation home for Sattaur and her family, who reside at Timehri, East Bank Demerara.
