Rehabilitation works at the Kitty Market, which have been on hold for a month, are slated to resume next week, according to City Hall spokesperson Debra Lewis.
The city’s administration announced that works would continue two weeks ago but Georgetown City Council Public Relations Officer Lewis said that a decision was taken at a meeting yesterday and the City Treasurer was instructed to release finances to purchase materials to move forward with the work.
Due to financial woes faced by the municipality and issues sourcing the right materials, works have been stalled for approximately a month.
Yesterday vendors told Stabroek News that they had expected the works on the building to be completed within the estimated time, since the construction workers had been working at a fast rate. City Hall had told vendors of the Kitty Market that the project, which began in February, would have been completed in three months.
The estimated cost of the restoration of the market was given as $240M.
