Stewartville Secondary punched their ticket to the next round of the Digicel Schools football championships dismissing Windsor Forest 5-2 yesterday at the Leonora Sports Facility.
Mark Powell recorded a brace on either side of halftime in the 31st and 60th minute while Shane Martin and Judah Albert netted in the 23rd and 46th minute respectively. R. George scored the opening goal in the 21st minute.
For the losing side, Raidon Thomas scored a double in the 65th and 72nd minute. Meanwhile, in Georgetown at the Camp Ayanganna ground, Bishops’ High defeated Tutorial High 3-1. Tyrese Souvenir, Darin Chan and Areeb Rodney scored in the 18th, 22nd and 74th minute respectively while Kareem Duncan netted in the 37th minute for Tutorial. In the second matchup of the zone, former Georgetown winners Lodge Secondary downed New Campbellville Secondary 2-0.
Over at the Bartica ground, Three Miles Secondary crushed hosts Bartica Secondary 4-1. The championships, which will be played in the traditional knockout format, will be staged in every region and will end on July 31st at the National Stadium in Providence.
Christianburg/Wismar Secondary has held a stranglehold on the event as they are current four-time defending champions. The other victor of the most prestigious event in the country was Georgetown Technical Institute who won the inaugural event.
Winner of the event is set to receive $1,000,000 toward the funding of a school project and the championship trophy while the second place unit will receive $700,000 and the runners-up accolade.
The third and fourth placed unit will walk away $400,000 and $350,000 and the corresponding trophy. Similarly, $100,000 will be awarded to achieve zone winner.
