Local distance king, Cleveland Forde will be looking to win his third consecutive CARICOM 10k title when the 12th annual fixture is staged here tomorrow on the city’s streets.
The distance dynamo who won the 2014 edition in St Kitts and last year in Barbados, will be relishing the opportunity to stand atop the podium on home soil.
However, it would not be a walk in the park for Forde as elite racers from Trinidad and Tobago, St Lucia, St Vincent, Barbados, Grenada, Dominica and other Caribbean islands have signaled their interest in competing tomorrow.
Forde will also have his hands filled with local rivals, Cleveland Thomas and a vastly improved Winston Missigher.
Missigher has won back to back 10km events, in the process upsetting the long distance torch bearer, Forde and Thomas to become the marked man on the road. The ultra-competitive Forde however will be looking to turn the tide on Missigher and avenge his uncommon loss on May 22.
The $US1000 first prize and winner’s trophy will also be on his radar when the race runs off at 06:00hrs from the CARICOM Secretariat.
For the race which ends in the National Park in the vicinity of the Children’s Monument, the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) has promised to uphold the standard of the IAAF in order to ensure the safety of all competitors.
The event which will coincide with the meeting of the Heads of Government Conference, will be staged under the theme ‘Promoting Peaceful and Healthy Societies.’ See you there. (Emmerson Campbell)
