Toolsie Persaud Timber Traders Inc has tendered an application to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for authorisation to undertake large-scale logging in Region Seven (Cuyuni/Mazaruni).
A notice in yesterday’s Sunday Stabroek said that the proposed area of logging is on the Right Bank of the Cuyuni River, Left Bank of the Puruni River, Left Bank of the Ekabago River, Right Bank of the Mara-Mara River.
The notice said that the project would entail felling, extraction of timber and transportation of same to a processing facility, grading, construction of roads and other facilities.
The EPA said in the notice that it recognises that the development may have significant impacts on the environment and that in keeping with its governing Act an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment is required before any decision is taken.
Members of the public are therefore being invited to make written submissions to the agency within 28 days of the notice setting out questions to be answered or matters to be considered in the assessment.
The notice said that a summary can be viewed on the EPA’s website or uplifted from its office at cost.
