An ex-convict was fatally stabbed by his girlfriend on Saturday night following an argument after both accused each another of having an affair. The woman was also wounded and she said she acted in self defence.
The stabbing occurred at the couple’s Recht-door-Zee, West Bank Demerara (WBD) apartment.
Dead is Fredrick Peters, 42, of Lot 90 Recht-door-Zee, Parfait-Harmonie, WBD and formerly of 3715 North Ruimveldt, Georgetown. The incident occurred at around 10:30pm on Saturday. Peters’ partner a 47-year-old mother of two, has been arrested. She told police that she acted in self-defence, sources say.
In a statement, the police said that investigations have so far revealed that Peters and a woman were involved in an argument at his home. “A scuffle then ensued between them during which the woman was stabbed to her left arm and right leg, and Peters to the left side of his neck. Peters collapsed from his stab wound. The woman then summoned the police, who on arriving took Peters to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival,” the statement said.
Stabroek News was told that the couple accused each other of having an affair. Peters’ body is at the Ezekiel Funeral Home awaiting an autopsy.
His partner was taken into custody and received medical attention for the wounds she suffered.
According to the suspect’s god-sister, Shondell (only name given), when the police returned to the scene with the woman, she said that Peters was trying to end her life after he accused her of being unfaithful. Shondell said that the woman’s body bore visible signs of physical abuse. She said that her hands and one foot were swollen and bore cuts. While at the police station, the mother of two also said that Peters had tried to suffocate her with a pillow, Shondell recounted. She said that her god-sister related that after being cut, she retaliated and dealt Peters a stab to his neck.
However, Peters’ relatives told a different story. One said that two months ago, when Peters was released from prison, the couple began a relationship. The relative said that Peters’ partner was a jealous woman and had accused the now-dead man of being involved in other relationships. The relative believes that because of Peters’ partner’s insecurity, she killed him.
When Stabroek News visited the Recht-door-Zee apartment yesterday, pools of blood were on the floor and passageway. Bloodstains were also seen in the bedroom and living room area.
Neighbours were tightlipped as they claimed that they did not know what happened. They did not say if they heard any sounds of distress emanating from the apartment during the night.
In 2007, Peters, a father of two had escaped from custody while being held at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court lockups. Prior to his recent release, Stabroek News was told that Peters served almost eight years in prison. His partner is expected to be charged by Wednesday.
