A handyman was stabbed to death yesterday morning by another man during an altercation on Cornhill Street, Georgetown, in front of the former Guyana National Cooperative Bank.
He has been identified as 45-year-old Dexter Arthur, whose last known address was Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara. Arthur was described as a “junkie” (substance abuser) who did odd jobs around Stabroek Market area.
He was stabbed once to his chest and died on spot.
After the incident which occurred around 7 am, the suspect, also an alcoholic, ran to the Brickdam Police Station and related what occurred. He was taken into custody.
According to reports reaching Stabroek News, Arthur and his attacker were involved in an argument when the suspect whipped out a knife and stabbed him.
When this newspaper visited the scene, the police had just finished conducting investigations.
While different version of the circumstances surrounding the incident were given, one man related that based on what he learnt Arthur was sleeping on the pavement when the suspect arrived and attempted to wake him up by pelting him.
As a result, Arthur became angry and armed himself with a piece of wood, but before he could retaliate the suspect stabbed him.
Efforts to contact the family of Arthur proved futile.
His body is currently at the Lyken’s Funeral Parlour awaiting a post-mortem examination. Up to late yesterday afternoon, no one had turned up to formally identify him.
