Cameos from Chris Lynn and Anthony Bramble powered the Guyana Amazon Warriors to a seven-wicket victory over the Jamaica Tallawahs last evening in match 9 of the 2016 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) played in front of a sold-out crowd at the Providence Stadium.
Chasing 100 for their third win of the competition, the unbeaten Guyana cruised to 101-3 in just 18 overs after the Aussie Lynn smashed 39 from 35 with a four and three sixes while local boy Anthony Bramble hammered 27 from 18 with two sixes and a four during their unbroken stand of 48.
In a poor batting exhibition, the Tallawahs failed to adjust to the conditions and were eventually steamrolled for an even 100 in 18 overs with 22-year-old Rovman Powell the top-scorer with a gutsy 38.
Warriors’ left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul utilized familiar conditions to finish as the pick of the lot with 3-20 and was reinforced by Pakistani Sohail Tanvir (2-11), all-rounder Rayad Emrit
(2-17) and Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa (2-26).
The Warriors began their chase in nightmare fashion, as Pakistan all-rounder Iman Wasim (2-6) accounted for the dismissals of openers: skipper Martin Guptill who pushed lazily at a delivery only to pick out Andre McCarthy at cover, followed by the dangerous Dwayne Smith who was bowled for 04.
Lynn and Jason Mohammed (22), the two new batsmen were then tasked with taking their team home without further hiccups. Lynn opened up his arms and smoked the first six of the Warriors innings, smashing Nkrumah Bonner’s leg-spin over the mid-wicket boundary.
Mohammed also capitalized on a loose full toss from Shakib Al Hasan (1-21) who he launched over the cover boundary rope for another six before he was trapped leg before wicket to the Bangladeshi left-arm spinner.
Bramble announced himself with a four off Steyn who then travelled the distance for a big six after missing a yorker-length delivery to Lynn.
Bramble and Lynn then clobbered the only over bowled by seamer Kesrick Williams for 15, before ending the match a few overs later with a flurry of boundaries.
Earlier, Chris Gayle, fresh off scores of 51 and a dominating 108, had his Providence demons haunt him yet again as he fell on the second ball of the first over to Tanvir, lbw for duck. Permaul got into the action soon after, first knocking over Chadwick Walton (12) before he snared the big wicket of Kumar Sangakarra (09) who hit a six before holding out to Mohammed.
Powell and Al Hasan (28) slightly rebuilt the innings for Jamaica who had already lost their top four batsmen. Things continued to do downhill for the visitors when Permaul continued to weave his magic and teamed up with Mohammed again to remove the Bangladeshi all-rounder.
Zampa then got into the action and the in-form Aussie leggy struck twice in a short period, removing both Bonner who was cleaned bowled and McCarthy who found himself brilliantly stumped by the keeper Bramble, for ducks which left the Tallawahs badly wounded at 80-6 after 14 overs.
Tanvir then returned to dismantle the stumps of Wasim for 03, then Steyn was run out for 02 courtesy of some teamwork between Smith and Bramble, followed by Emrit who removed the top-scorer Powell before taking the last wicket of Williams (04) who was out leg before wicket.
