Tourney hosts Guyana qualified for the semi-final round in the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Boys u16 Championship, besting Jamaica 73-57 yesterday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Needing to win while scoring 70 points or more, Guyana handed Jamaica their first loss of the event as Jordan Alphonso recorded another double-double of 22 points and 12 rebounds.
Kevon Wiggins was the next best scorer with 16 points while Shamar France netted 13 points and Akeem Crandon registered 10 points and 22 rebounds.
For the loser, Jalen Menzies recorded a match high 25 points whilst Samora Williams bagged a double-double of 17 points and 17 rebounds.
With the result, Guyana topped group-B and will face off with Barbados in the semi-final round while Jamaica finished second in zone and will match skills with group-A winner and undefeated tourney juggernaut The Bahamas.
Meanwhile, Suriname brushed aside Trinidad and Tobago 72-56, relegating the latter to a 4-0 record in the tourney. Serdinio Rozewijn top scored for the Dutch with 18 points and 11 rebounds while Farai Stoffels chipped in with 13 points.
On the other end, Jordan Persad top scored with 31 points. With the result, Suriname conclude the group stage with a record of three wins and one loss.
Also, The Bahamas completed a perfect group round in the event, dismissing Barbados by a 100-41 margin. It was the fourth straight win for the Bahamians who have now scored at least 100 points in every fixture.
Detarrio Thompson top scored in the win with 15 points while Christopher Johnson scored 12 points. Similarly, the likes of Michael Williams, Samuel Hunter, Michael Cartwright and Alfredo Brown had 11 points each while Dominick Bridgewater scored 10 points.
For the Barbadians, Kiserian Adams recorded 10 points. With the loss, Barbados finish the group stage 3-1. Both teams will now advance to the knockout round.
Meanwhile Dominica’s poor showing in the Championship continued, going down to British Virgin Islands 82-37 in the earlier contest.
It was the first win for the BVI unit who was led by a 16-point effort and nine rebounds from Kiandre Clarke while Jomoi Levons, Elain O’Neal and Renrick Masaac scored 15, 14 and 12 points respectively.
The best scorer for the loser was Keniah Lloyd with eight points. With the loss, Dominica finish the event 0-4.
On Wednesday, Guyana clinched their second win of the event, downing Trinidad and Tobago by a 69-52 margin. Fresh off their loss to Suriname, the locals were led by the ever dependable Alphonso with a double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds.
He was assisted by Wiggins, Shamar France and Nigel Bowen who scored 18, 14 and 11 points apiece. For the twin island republic, Jordan Persad bagged a game high 23 points in the loss while the best scorer with 13 points was Netrell Malcolm.
