A Bartica youth was yesterday denied bail after police say he was found with more than 100 grammes of cannabis at his home.
It is alleged that on July 8, at First Avenue, Bartica, Dennis Boston, 19, had in his possession 112 grammes of cannabis for trafficking. Boston, who was described as a sales boy, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in a city court.
According to Boston’s attorney, Marcel Bobb, the drugs were found on premises which are currently in dispute between his client’s family and others.
The lawyer argued that the finding of the drugs was a bit suspicious since Boston and his family were ordered to leave the house.
Bobb said that on the day in question, the police went to remove Boston from the premises and they conducted a search during which they found the cannabis.
The lawyer also argued that his client was not the only person with a key to the premises since many others also frequented the home.
But Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones said his account of the find differed from the lawyer’s. Jones said that the police, acting on information, went to the house in Bartica and met the defendant. The officers then carried out a search and the narcotics were found in Boston’s bedroom.
The drugs were in a shirt which belonged to him, he said, while adding that Boston told the police that a man had given him the drugs to keep.
After hearing the submissions, the Chief Magistrate remanded Boston to prison until August 10.
