Despite his pleas for bail, a young father is now a remanded prisoner on gun and ammunition charges.
A city court heard yesterday that on July 8, in Georgetown, Andrew Budhu, 20, of Lot 18 Enterprise Gardens, East Coast Demerara, had in his possession a 9 mm pistol without being a licenced firearm holder.
A second charge against Budhu stated that on the same day, he was also in possession of five live 9 mm rounds of ammunition.
Budhu, who said he holds two jobs, pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to him by Magistrate Annette Singh.
Police Prosecutor Adunni Inniss objected to bail, citing the prevalence of the offence.
Before he was remanded to prison by the magistrate, Budhu begged her not send him to jail for the sake of his child, whom he said is only three months.
He also told the court that while in police custody, he was not given a chance to call his lawyer to inform him of his date for arraignment. He also said that he has two jobs to be at and, therefore, he should at least be granted bail.
In spite of his efforts the defendant was remanded to prison until August 3, when his trial is expected to begin.
