The Guyana Power and Light (GPL) today said that at approximately 23:09hrs last night, the Demerara Berbice Interconnected System experienced a shutdown as a result of a faulty connection or “Pot Head” that links the 69KV submarine cable to the overhead transmission lines at Kingston.
While restoration efforts were hampered due to problems encountered while restarting some of the generating units at the Kingston Plants, power was restored to most consumers by 02:30 hrs, GPL said in a statement.
Every effort is being made to restore the link to the Vreed-en-Hoop 26 MW Station.
GPL said that it regretted any inconvenience caused.
The blackout left citizens fuming up and down the coast. Large parts of regions 3,4 and five were without power and left in the darkness. The shutdown highlighted ongoing concerns about the fragility of the power supply system.
