Information was extracted from Carter Center report

Dear Editor,

I refer to a letter from Ali Majeed (‘Sase Singh’s information is inaccurate’ SN, July 12). The source of the figures in my letter is the ‘Final Report from the Carter Center 1990-1992’, which can be found here:

The specific section quoted was from pages 115-116.

That report specifically cited Matheson Williams as being a PPP MP and Bagot Paul as a WPA MP.  If Mr Majeed has a problem with the report, he can forward it to the Carter Center in Atlanta.

Also, that report tagged Joseph Marco DeSouza as a PPP MP from Region 1 (North West).  Everyone from that period knew Marco DeSouza was a PPP man in the North West.

I stand by my letter since it represented research, and the research stands up to scrutiny.

What is being exposed is a determined effort by an irrelevant group whose intellectual authors are now using a unique propaganda front to try desperately to revise history using fanciful fiction to give relevance to themselves in the face of political death.

Too many people are discounting the alliance between the TUF and the PPP in 1992 which we all saw evolve over the years.  Thus I stand by my original position, that the WPA was not needed to secure a majority for Jagan in 1992.

But these politically dead forces cannot unwind fact and history with figments of their imagination as they try to reinvent themselves.  I wonder why they did not request Dr Rupert Roopnaraine, a senior leader who was in the thick of things, to pen an official position on that period?

Yours faithfully,

Sase Singh
