The Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Guyana (FITUG) believes that there has not been a proper feasibility study on the parking meter project proposed by the Georgetown City Council and it should be scrapped.
According to a FITUG press release, while there is a need for the capital and townships to enjoy order and attractiveness and address growing congestion, the impact of these efforts on citizens of and visitors to the city should be considered.
According to the release, there will be a heavy financial burden on the ordinary taxi and minibus owners, delivery vans, and persons making simple purchases or visiting city hospitals if the scheme is implemented.
The release added that there is much secrecy in relation to the contract which prevents taxpayers from having a clear understanding of the details of the project.
According to FITUG, there should be more transparency and accountability from the Mayor and City Council with regards to the project and that it should not be pursued.
It added that “Former Minister, Henry Jeffrey has correctly pointed out that the secrecy of the contract guarded by the Mayor and her senior cohorts does not allow taxpayers a clear understanding of the financial outlays and the projected earnings of the parking meters enterprise”.
