The Guyana Police Force (GPF) is confident that Jamaica can offer support in the development of local crime and security intelligence-gathering strategies and techniques.
This is according to Commissioner of Police Seelall Persaud, who was at the time reflecting on the accomplishments of the GPF during the Anniversary Award Ceremony which was held yesterday at the Tactical Services Unit, Eve Leary.
Persaud explained that in the area of police intelligence gathering, the GPF has seen a lot of developments which have significantly contributed to solving many of the serious crimes that have occurred recently.
However, he said, developments of this kind are not reflected in the area of security intelligence. As a result, a decision was made to seek assistance from the Jamaican Constabulary Force (JCF) for the development of the local security intelligence infrastructure.
With the Jamaican Commissioner of Police already on board and financial support received from UNICEF, Seelall stated that some officers from the JCF will be coming to Guyana to carry out an assessment of the force’s crime and security intelligence system with the aim of recommending improvements.
Once that is completed, he said, the force will move to implement the recommendations with the hope of seeing positive changes in the intelligence infrastructure.
“We are hoping to see a great interface with crime intelligence and security intelligence and further developing our general capacity to deliver the highly expected services to the people in our communities,” Persaud said.
He further stated that with more than 20 years’ work across the Caribbean, he sees Jamaica as having the best intelligence in the English-speaking Caribbean, particularly since Jamaica has been known to have experienced very intense security situations.
