BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Left-hander Nicholas Pooran says he is excited about continuing to rebuild his career, especially after spending a year out of the game following a tragic vehicular accident last year January.
The Trinidadian was forced to undergo surgery on his left knee and ankle after sustaining injuries in the smash-up, and only returned to competitive cricket last February.
Snapped up by Barbados Tridents in the Caribbean Premier League draft, Pooran shone at Kensington Oval on Wednesday night when he stroked a cameo 38 from just 19 balls to help the hosts down St Kitts and Nevis Patriots by 25 runs.
“The year and a half that I was out was very tough, especially mentally, because I was unsure if I was ever going to play cricket again,” the Trinidadian said following Wednesday’s victory.
“Thank God I got the opportunity, I worked very hard at therapy each day and it was tough, but I came a long way.”
The 20-year-old showed no signs from the layoff as he helped bail Tridents out of trouble with a bold innings.
Entering at 29 for three in the sixth over, he blasted two fours and four sixes to dominate a 60-run, fourth wicket stand with South African stroke-maker AB de Villiers, who top-scored with 82 from 54 balls.
