From tomorrow, the Guyana Tennis Association (GTA) will relocated the morning sessions of the annual P & P Insurance Brokers Tennis Camp for 6-11 year-olds to the National Gymnasium up until July 29.
Sessions will be held from 9:00am to 11: am on those days.
According to a press release from the GTA, the camp, which was initially conducted at the National Racquet Centre has attracted at least 35 young tennis hopefuls who braved the early morning showers to ensure a chance to learn to play the game.
According to the release, Vikash Panday, son of P & P Insurance Broker’s Managing Director, Bish Panday, in officially opening the camp during the week, gave a pep talk to the young children and their parents.
He recounted the contributions of his company to the various sport fraternities to create opportunities for personal development but said that he recognises tennis as a sport that stands out with great benefits such as college scholarships for young athletes.
According to the release, young Panday said he remembered participating in the camp for several years and urged the young players to enjoy themselves while learning to play the sport.
He also urged the GLTA to make special efforts to ensure that the event is as successful as it has been in the past.
Grace McCalman, GLTA Chair of Junior Development participation, expressed appreciation for the 12th consecutive P&P tennis camp but said the lack of a Physical Education programme to accommodate tennis in several primary schools was cause for concern.
She reported that one child became nauseous after light exercise on the first day because her school has no PE programme and reiterated that physical exercise was necessary for the physical and mental well-being of young children, stated the release.
McCalman, the release added said that she hoped that all primary schools will implement PE activities urgently adding that she noted the most recent tennis scholar Gavin Lewis who participated in PnP camps since its inception, has adopted a serious approach to his tennis training.
Coaches Leyland Leacock, Shelly Daly and Daniel Lopes are together conducting the camp and parents can register new players by calling 672-8299. The afternoon session for 12 years and up continues at the National Racquet Centre from noon to 2:00pm from Monday until July 29th.
