The Committee of Appointments has recommended Matthew Edward Hugh Langevine for the position of Director of the Financial Intelligence Unit after the top candidate for the position was barred following a police report.
Abiose Thomas has been named as Langevine’s deputy.
According to a report tabled in the National Assembly today by the Committee, Langevine was not the top candidate for the position but the second. However, following a member’s request for the Commissioner of Police to execute a background check on the top candidate and the subsequent response, it was decided that “the top ranked candidate was no longer eligible for consideration for the appointment…,” the report said. It did not name the top candidate.
Thomas was given the green light after he received five votes from the government side of the committee, while the four opposition members voted for Alicia Williams who was also shortlisted for the position.
After the tabled reported is debated and passed, the two will be appointed.
