Chartered accountant Godfrey Statia is set to take up the position of Commissioner-General of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA), a reliable source has confirmed.
According to the source, the Board of GRA held a special meeting yesterday and decided that Statia would be the new Commissioner-General.
He will be taking up the position over five months after Khurshid Sattaur was axed.
Statia, who was part of the tax reform committee that was set up by government last year, worked at GRA some years ago as Deputy Commissioner of Inland Revenue and he was also former Deputy CEO of GTT.
Last month, Chairman of the GRA Board Rawle Lucas had told a press conference that Ingrid Griffith, who at the time was acting Commissioner-General, had opted to proceed on leave and upon her resumption she would take over the portfolio of Head of Corporate Services.
Sattaur was let go after he admitted to having breached his oath of office by releasing private taxpayer data, according to Lucas, who said it was among several discoveries that were made.
In March, the GRA had advertised to fill the vacancy of Commissioner-General and the required qualifications included a professional accounting/auditing designation and a Master’s degree in taxation, business administration, economics, information technology or law. Applicants had to also possess a minimum of 15 years’ experience in tax and customs administration, with a minimum of eight years at the executive level.
