A man was last week sentenced to two years’ imprisonment in absentia on a charge of larceny from the person.
Seon Davis, 36, called ‘Trickery’ of 164 Charlotte Street, Lacytown was found guilty in his absence by Magistrate Delon Bess, following a trial.
He had been accused of snatching a gold band worth $220,000 from Rural Constable Godfrey Thomas in Regent Street on April 2, 2016.
Davis, who was unrepresented by counsel, was initially placed on $30,000 bail by Magistrate Bess. However, he was unable to raise the sum. On his third court appearance, and following his pleas, Magistrate Bess lowered his bail amount to $10,000.
Led by Police Prosecutor, Lance Corporal Christopher Morris, four witnesses testified, including the virtual complainant, and were cross-examined by Davis.
However, on the last two occasions, Davis was a no-show and Magistrate Bess handed down his ruling and sentence ex parte. According to reports, Davis was captured yesterday in the vicinity of the Plaisance car park and was taken into custody to begin serving his sentence.
