Ann’s Grove and Eagles FC became the latest teams to clinch their berths to the next round in the Mayor’s Cup Football Championship, edging Cougars and Uitvlugt respectively on Sunday at the Victoria Community ground.
Ann’s Grove edged Cougars of Berbice 2-1 through goals from Nikosie Denny in the 28th minute and Quincy Johnson in the 32nd minute.
For the Berbicians, Mark Wong pulled one back in the 70th minute.
Linden outfit Eagles FC squeaked past West Demerara giants Uitvlugt 1-0. Jamal Allicock was the difference on the night for the youthful unit as he netted in the 53rd minute.
The event will resume on Sunday at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground with four matches.
In the opening salvo at 15:00hrs, the Guyana Police Force will take aim at Sunburst Camptown while the second engagement will pit Santos against Beavers of West Demerara from 17:00hrs.
In the third affair, Riddim Squad will match skills with Pouderoyen from 19:00hrs while the final showdown of the evening at 21:00hrs will witness Western Tigers tackling Den Amstel FC.
The winning team will receive $700,000 and the championship trophy compliments of Aruwai resort while the runners-up will pocket the package of $300,000 and the Ansa McAl trophy.
The third placed finisher will receive $200,000 and the John Fernandes trophy while the fourth placed unit will receive $100,000 and the Ministry of State trophy.
The victorious side will receive hampers donated by Ricks and Sari while the event’s top scorer will walk away with a three-piece suite compliments of AH&L Kissoon Furniture Store.
