Region Six Regional Executive Officer (REO) Dr. Veerasammy Ramayya was granted permission by the Ministry of Communities to proceed on 14 days of vacation leave.
A release yesterday from the Ministry of Communities said that Ramayya’s leave became effective on Monday July 18, 2016 and will run through to July 30, 2016. Ramayya is scheduled to return to work and resume duties on August 2, 2016.
The release came in the wake of reports from the Region Six (East Berbice/Corentyne) council that the REO had abandoned his post.
The ministry release said that a formal letter of approval was issued by the ministry and a copy was dispatched to Regional Chairman, David Armogan.
Denis Deroop, Vice Chairman, Region Six had told Stabroek News on Monday that there had been no formal letter from the Ministry of Communities approving leave for Ramayya. He stated that after Ramayya did not show up for work in the new week, he started to inquire about his whereabouts.
“The Deputy Regional Executive Officer told me that Ramayya said he is taking leave”, Deroop recalled, adding “leave wasn’t officially approved by the Ministry for him…I would assume he walked off the job”.
Deroop said that due to the REO’s absence some of the region’s issues have been left unresolved but he assured the public that the region is in capable hands.
Efforts by Stabroek News to contact Ramayya for a comment proved futile.
