Dear Editor,
I am a fourteen-year-old Canadian resident vacationing in Guyana for the summer break. I like to read your online edition when I’m overseas to keep up to date with events in Guyana, and my favourite column by far is Dr Ian McDonald’s. My father (who is a huge fan) and I read it every Sunday. His exceptional writings and poetry have inspired me to write a poem of my own, entitled ‘Rain’.
Every time I come to Guyana I am always amazed by her beauty, and even though Canada is stunning, Guyana has something about its nature and greenery that gets me every time. My poem describes that very beauty, while also tackling the issue of deforestation and human impact on nature, and it is dedicated to Dr Ian McDonald as he is my inspiration.
I know that this paper does not publish poetry, so I just wanted to thank Dr McDonald for all of his writings and works, for he has really encouraged me to pursue literature. I hope that one day I may be able to be a writer like him, who can inspire other people as well, and make a difference in the world by using just the power of words.
Yours faithfully,
Gauri Dhanrajh
