Coach of the Guyana Women’s team Andre Percival is calling on his batters to step up ahead of tomorrow’s opening round of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional T20 tournament.
Following the end of the rain-affected 50 overs-a-side leg of the competition won by Trinidad & Tobago a few days ago, the ladies will look to grab the last chance at winning a title at home when they tackle their neighbours in the T20’s which will be played on a three-match per day basis at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.
When Stabroek Sport visited the Stadium yesterday, Percival’s team Was engaged in net sessions before preparing for another session under lights which was mainly to help them acclimatize ahead of their opening match against the Leeward Islands to be played under lights.
Percival, a former national all-rounder, stressed on the importance of his batters making good scores during the next few rounds. “We will need to up our game a little more and I’m stressing on the batters again to put good runs on the board because we have a good bowling unit but we just need to get the runs and defend it”, he said.
Despite the majority of their matches in the 50 over leg being affected by rain, Percival said he was hopeful that the weather would give leeway so his team can finally have the opportunity to flex their muscles over the duration of the T20’s.
Speaking on the transition from 50 to 20 overs, the former Berbice Captain said the process will not be that difficult as players from his team have done that in the past, adding that the energy from the 50 overs will play a crucial part in the T20’s for Guyana.
“We have a lot of experienced T20 players, about 90 percent of players were there before and they can shift between formats, it’s just to have them up their game a little more over the next few days.
I think we have the right approach and the momentum, so we will just be transferring it to the T20s because we have the all-round strength in the team so we expect anyone to deliver for us”. He ended.
Guyana will play the last of three matches tomorrow against Leeward Islands beginning at 19:00hrs.
