National footballer Rensford Coleridge remains in hospital in a critical condition after he was stabbed several times about his body, allegedly by his neighbour, on Tuesday evening.
Coleridge called ‘Baba,’, 28, a member of Western Tigers Football Club and of Queen Street, South Cummingsburg, Georgetown was stabbed to his neck, temple and abdomen around 9 pm on Tuesday.
He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he remained a patient up to press time in a critical condition, semi-conscious and breathing through a ventilator.
The suspect was taken into custody shortly after the incident and is assisting the police with investigations.
According to reports reaching Stabroek News, Coleridge was sitting in front of a shop, located a short distance away from his home watching television when the suspect, who was armed with a knife, confronted him and stabbed him several times about his body.
The suspect then made his way to his home, which is located behind Coleridge’s house and was arrested after his sister alerted the police.
While the circumstances surrounding the incident are sketchy, Coleridge’s aunt, Tracy (only name given), told this newspaper yesterday that based on what she heard, the suspect became angry after he learnt that Coleridge was texting his girlfriend.
Tracy related that on Tuesday evening, she and three friends were sitting in front of her premises, when she saw the suspect entering the shop. “Before I watch back, I just see he scramble on my nephew start juk he up all over and he [Coleridge] fall on the ground,” Tracy said.
“When he done do what he had to do, he took his crutch, because his foot break, and walk back into his house and deh saying that I gone kill yuh,” she added.
She is of the belief that the suspect’s act was premeditated. According to Tracy, just three weeks ago, the suspect had chased Coleridge with a cutlass.
