Spearheaded by Caribbean U13 champion Shomari Wiltshire, Guyana boys team edged Jamaica 3-2 in their Pool A match of the Caribbean junior squash championships in the Cayman Islands.
Wiltshire, fresh from his U13 triumph in the individual singles competition, was on court first and dropped just three points in his match against Tobias Levy winning 11 – 1, 11 – 1, 11 – 1.
In the battle of the Under 19s number two players, Guyana’s Alec Melville avenged his individual singles defeat to Stephan Morrison with a 3- victory winning 12 – 10, 4 – 11, 11 – 7 and 11 – 6.
The situation was duly reversed in the battle of the U19 number one players.
Ben Mekdeci had beaten Tahjia Lumley in the individual singles event and was confident of making it two out of two.
Things seemed to be going to plan when Mekdeci won the first game 11 – 5 but then he lost the next three games, 10 – 12, 7-11 and 10 – 12.
In the boys U15 tie Anthony Islam strolled to a straight sets win over Sebastian Levy 11 – 3, 11 – 1, 14 – 12 and in the final match Alex Cheeks lost to Jonathan Walker, 11 – 7, 6 – 11, 8 – 11, 6 – 11 in an U17 encounter.
Meanwhile the girls team match defeated the Cayman Islands by four matches to one with wins from Madison Fernandes, Larissa Wiltshire, Taylor Fernandes and Rebecca Low with Makeda Harding losing her match up.
