-Bush Lot Secondary oust home team Mahdia in shootout
Region #5 champs Bush Lot Secondary sealed a quarterfinal berth in the Digicel Schools football championships yesterday after edging Region #8 winners Mahdia Secondary 4-3 on penalty kicks at the Campbelltown Community ground.
The game, watched by a large partisan crowd, ended 0-0.
Bush Lot Secondary’s Eli Nurse scored on his team’s first attempt but the home side equalized through Dominique Rodriguez.
Titus Webster next scored for the Berbicians while Troy Baker did likewise for Mahdia.
Kevin Felix kept Bush Lot ahead at the start of the third round and the home side needed a little luck after Ray James struck the crossbar with his effort which then settled into the back of the net.
Momentum shifted in the fourth round as Berbice again netted through
Shaqueel DeHarte while Osafa Simpson failed from the mark, curling his effort wide of the left corner much to the disappointment of the crowd.
Needing only a conversion in the fifth round to seal the outcome, Bush Lot handed Mahdia a lifeline as Kevon Mars missed, placing his effort wide of the left side to send the crowd into a frenzy.
With a goal required to send the match into the sudden death realm, Captain Travis Caesar disappointed the home crowd as his tame effort went straight to the goalkeeper who calmly tipped the ball over the crossbar to break Mahdia hearts.
Meanwhile, over at the Mabaruma ground, defending champions Wismar/Christianburg Secondary edged North West Secondary 11-10 on sudden death penalty kicks after normal time ended 0-0.
Over at the Leonora Sports Facility, Annai Secondary defeated Vergenoegen Secondary 3-0 while at the Lake Mainstay ground, Waramadong squeaked past Charity Secondary 1-0.
