Marlon Callender, the guard accused of the fatal shooting of a fisherman at the Pritipaul Singh wharf last year, was on Monday committed to stand trial in the High Court.
Callender was charged with murdering Envil Pollard on January 29, 2015, at McDoom, East Bank Demerara.
He was committed to stand trial at the conclusion of the preliminary inquiry into the charge that was conducted by city magistrate Judy Latchman.
Callender is committed to stand trial at the Demerara Assizes and is to remain on remand until that time.
Pollard, also known as ‘Elvis,’ of 384 Crane Playfield, West Coast Demerara, was killed in what police had described as a confrontation with the security guard.
The police had said in a statement that the shooting occurred after Pollard, who was in his boat under the wharf, was “confronted” by the armed security guard, who is attached to Pritipaul Singh Investment Inc.
He was later shot to his chest and subsequently taken to the George-town Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Based on reports gathered by this newspaper, it appeared as though the security guard had an ongoing problem with Pollard, from whom he had been receiving payments in exchange for allowing the man to fish under the wharf.
