The Rugby Americas North (RAN) 15s final involving Guyana and Mexico will now be played on October 1 instead of today as previously reported.
According to the top brass of the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU), the postponement was due to hosts (Mexico) being unable to secure a venue to stage the final.
The change of date augurs well for Guyana since it will give the young and experienced players in the team more time to gel.
Said team Manager, Robbie Roberts on Thursday at Olympic House: “What it will do for us, we will have some more time to prepare in terms of fitness because we are going to high altitude. So we will have to use this time that we have here to make sure the guys improve more on their fitness so they can be able to handle the high altitude in Mexico City.”
Roberts also added that the union has received some positive signs from the government towards the $15M budget to blanket the expenses for the final.
“We are working on getting the team in there at least a week prior to the game. We have approached the government for assistance and they seem to be very keen on assisting us so we are now waiting on a response from them.”
The GRFU also spoke briefly about the performance of the U19 team which competed at the RAN Championship in Miami, Florida, USA.
