Anisa Mohammed starred with the ball as Trinidad and Tobago defeated Guyana by five wickets yesterday in the ongoing West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional Women’s T20 tournament played at the Providence National Stadium.
Mohammed, a senior member of the West Indies team, snared 4-9 to help keep the hosts to 63-8 in 20 overs after Trinidad lost the toss and had to bowl first in the low-scoring encounter.
Skipper Tremayne Smartt and Melanie Henry scored 14 runs respectively for Guyana who have now lost two of their three matches so far with their final match to be played today.
The Trinidadians reached 64-5 with Brittney Cooper cracking a four and a six in her top score of 18 while Rachel Vincent ended on 13 not out.
Off-spinner Plaffiana Millington, who picked up two wickets, was the pick of the bowlers while the veteran pair of pacer Erva Giddings and Subrina Munroe claimed one wicket each for the hosts.
Chasing a low total, Trinidad slipped from 31-1 to 48-5 after the hosts made early in-roads which they should have capitalized on after Captain Tremayne Smartt had her West Indies teammate and opposite number Melissa Aguilera run out for duck.
Despite the breakthroughs, Trinidad were never in trouble chasing such a low target and although they received meaningful contributions from some of their players, it was the smart batting of Mohammed who ended on eight and Vincent, which saw them home.
Playing under difficult conditions, Guyana found it difficult to get going as their batters struggled against f Mohammed and company who kept them at 22-2 after 10 overs.
With regular strikes from Mohammed backed up by a wicket each from Leann Kirby, Shenelle Lord and Karishma Kamharack, Guyana lost most of their batters for single digit scores as no other player could get out the blocks.
