Defending champions Wismar/ Christianburg Secondary stormed their way into the semi-finals of the Digicel Schools football championships by dismantling Region #6 winners Tutorial Secondary 6-0 in their quarterfinal fixture yesterday at the Leonora Sports Facility.
Although the Berbicians managed to hold the Lindeners to only one goal in the first period compliments a 17th minute conversion from U17 national forward Omar Brewley, the matchup took on a different complexion in the second period as the holder’s smashed five goals past their opponents.
Amar Jones started the second half blitz three minutes into the resumption while Antwoine Gikk made it 3-0 as he found the back of the net in the 65th minute.
Brewley deservedly completed his double as etched his name once more on the scorer’s sheet in the 72nd minute before goals from Jermin Kingston and Shaquille Campbelville in the 85th and 89th minute sealed the scoreline.
With the win, Wismar/Christianburg sealed a date with South Georgetown winners Sir Leon Lessons. Meanwhile, in the earlier quarterfinal, Region #5 champions Bush Lot Secondary downed East Bank winner Soesdyke Secondary 3-1.
Nippy forward Titus Webster was the main threat for the West Berbicians with a hat-trick on either side of the break in the fourth, 14th and 80th minute. For the losers, Tyrone Khan scored in the 24th minute.
Bush Lot Secondary will now lock horns with North Georgetown champions Chase Academy for a berth in the final.
The event, which is being played in the traditional knockout format, will end on July 31st at the National Stadium, Providence.
Christianburg/Wismar Secondary has held a stranglehold on the event as they are current four time defending champions. The other victor of the event was Government Technical Institute who won the inaugural championship.
The winning team is set to receive $1,000,000 to funding a school project and the championship trophy while the second place unit will receive $700,000 and the runners-up accolade.
The third and fourth placed unit will walk away $400,000 and $350,000 and trophies while $100,000 will be awarded to each zone winner.
