Unbeaten half centuries from Shemaine Campbelle and Lashauna Toussaint helped Guyana hammer the Leeward Islands by 96 runs in the final round of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional Women’s T20 tournament.
West Indies player Campbelle, who copped the MVP award, stroked an eye-catching 70 from 53 deliveries with seven fours and two maximums while Toussaint’s 63 was decorated with five fours as the two added 147 for the second wicket to propel Guyana to 158-1 in 20 overs.
A Clinical bowling effort by the Guyanese was led by the in-form off-spinner Plaffiana Millington, who was the pick of the bowlers, ending with 3-7 while pacer Erva Giddings (2-14), helped strangle the Leewards who were dismissed for 62 in 16.4 overs.
The Leewards lost a cluster of wickets during the chase. Openers Grace Persaud (07) and Eldora Sylvester (05) were bowled by Giddings and Tremayne Smartt while Amanda Edwards (10) was mopped up by seamer Sabrina Munroe and Jenison Richards (01), was run out a few balls later.
After 10 overs the score was 41-6 and Millington continued to get wickets in the tournament ripping through the middle overs to remove Vice-skipper Saneldo Willett (10), Captain Shawnista Hector (05) and Rozel Liburd (08).
Promoted to open the batting, Toussaint made the most of her opportunity as she attacked the Leewards bowlers, picking up a fair number of boundaries during the early stages of the game.
The lone wicket-taker Hector (1-28) served up a good delivery which cleaned up the other opener Melanie Henry (01) leaving the score 11-1.
However, Toussaint and Campbelle consolidated after the loss with Richards feeling the brunt of the two set batters, her 14th over going for 15 runs courtesy of some lusty blows.
Toussaint got to her 47-ball half-century with a four and Guyana’s 100 came shortly after in 15 overs as the pair sought to make the most of the remaining overs. Campbelle eventually reached her milestone off 40 balls with five fours and a six and the duo remained rock-steady when the overs expired.
