An East Canje taxi driver is now hospitalised after being stabbed multiples times about his body during an attempted carjacking.
Chunilall Dudnauth, also known as Ricky, 53, of East Canefield Settlement, East Canje, Berbice, is now a patient in the Intensive Care Unit of the New Amsterdam Hospital, where he was rushed with stab wounds to his neck, side, back and one of his hands.
Stabroek News was told that around 10am yesterday, Dudnauth picked up a passenger who said he was heading to the last house in Welfare Street, Canefield Settlement.
Residents of the area said that they saw the wounded Dudnauth run out of the car and the person driving attempting to run him over. One resident, Latchmie, said she heard someone hollering, “Thief! Thief! And help!”
“When we run out, we find the man on the ground and the next man already run out through the street,” she said.
“When we see is Ricky, we know him and he tell us the man was trying to rob him [of] his car, that when he get stab he try to come out of the car and try to escape and then the man take over the car, the man a try to knock him down like he want to kill him,” she added.
Another resident, who was riding through the street and witnessed the incident, said he saw the driver of the car trying to hit Dudnauth. Residents explained that during the driver’s attempts to run Dudnauth over, the car slipped sideways into a drain, causing the perpetrator to give up and make an escape.
Villagers recalled that the perpetrator was dressed in all over black, with a red hoodie and a black backpack.
Meanwhile, this newspaper was told that Dudnauth was threatened in February when he inadvertently foiled the getaway of a carjacker. According to an eyewitness, the carjacker was making an escape in a stolen vehicle when he collided with Dudnauth. The eyewitness, who asked that his identity not be released, stated the carjacker at that time warned Dudnauth that he would get even with him.
