Jetty Gunners were crowned the second annual `Ballers in the Summer Street Football Champions’ after edging Sparta Boss 1-0 via penalty kicks in the final on Saturday at the Pouderoyen Tarmac.
With the score locked at 0-0 at the end of normal time in front of a large crowd, the first round of penalty kicks failed to separate the teams as they both failed from the distance.
The second round of kicks continued poorly for the East La Penitence based unit as they missed in the form of Solomon Austin. This time, Jetty Gunners capitalized on their opportunity, netting from the mark to lead 1-0 entering the third and final round.
Needing a conversion to keep their hopes alive of winning the matchup, Sparta Boss sealed their own fate as Cleon Forrester missed from the distance, handing the title to Jetty Gunners.
With the result, the West Demerara unit received the first place package of $200,000 and the championship trophy. For the Georgetown unit, they collected $150,000. Also in the third place playoff, North Ruimveldt downed Samaroo Dam by a 2-0 margin.
Linris Carrington opened the scoring in the 20th minute before Colin Daniels applied the finishing touch eight minutes later. Due to the result, North Ruimveldt walked away with $50,000. For their effort, Samaroo Dam pocketed $20,000.
Meanwhile, in the earlier semi-final round, Jetty Gunners edged Samaroo Dam 1-0 while Sparta Boss dismissed North Ruimveldt 2-0. Sheldon Shepherd recorded a double on either side of half time in the 11th and 20th minute.
The sponsors of the tournament were OJ’s Auto Sales, Golf Motor Oil, Guyana Police Force ‘D’ Division and Banks DIH Limited.
