A mason who was allegedly held by the police with more than 500 grammes of marijuana in his possession was yesterday remanded to prison by the chief magistrate.
The court heard that on July 23, at Brickdam, Georgetown, Lennox Goodman, 32, of Lot 4 Archer Road, Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo, had in his possession 530 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking. Goodman pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
Goodman’s attorney while making an application for his bail, said that his client is the sole bread winner for his family, which comprises a disabled sister, his mother and two minors. He further stated that his client was not a flight risk and he has no pending matters before the court. The attorney said that based on these special reasons he hopes that the court grants his client bail.
However, in reply, Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones sternly objected to bail, arguing that the reasons the lawyer listed were not special.
According to the prosecutor, Goodman was caught by the police while buying a battery for a phone, which was allegedly stolen from a different branch of the same store where he went to purchase the battery.
Jones said the owner of the store realized it was one of his phones and summoned the police. When the police came, they conducted a search on Goodman and found the narcotics, he related.
The chief magistrate subsequently denied bail and remanded Goodman to prison. His matter was then adjourned until August 25.
