Roberts expresses confidence in cyclists

On the eve of the departure of the national junior cycling team to St Lucia, coach of the formidable five-man unit, Randolph Roberts yesterday expressed confidence in the young cyclists.

Roberts, coach of the Flying Ace Cycle Club which organizes several races in Berbice, told this publication that the team was “strong and well experienced” and he expects his charges to excel when they represent the Golden Arrowhead during the weekend in the eastern Caribbean island.

The team comprises juniors Christopher Cornelius, Raphael Leung, Andrew Hicks and Jornell Yearwood and juvenile, Zaman Khan.

Khan’s participation at the championships has been aided by sponsorship from Steven Edwards.

According to Roberts, the Time Trial at the annual Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships will be held Saturday while the road race (52 miles) pedals off on Sunday.

Roberts, along with manager Marc Sonoram, maintained that the mission of the quintet was to medal at the annual championships despite the unfamiliar hilly nature of the island’s terrain.

The young wheelsmen have been in sublime form and are expected to return with hardware.

Berbice-based Hicks has been dominating events in that part of the country. He, however, finished runner up to Cornelius in the time trial (junior) championships last month.

Cornelius also won the junior road race title when the National Cycling Championships was staged a few weeks ago.
