KINGSTOWN, St Vincent, CMC – Opener Shian Brathwaite stroked a half-century but it was not enough to prevent Trinidad and Tobago from taking the upper hand against Barbados on the second day of their opening round game in the Regional Under-19 Championship here yesterday.
Replying to T&T’s massive 371 all out at Arnos Vale, Barbados finished on 171 for six – still 200 runs behind heading into today’s final day.
Brathwaite struck 72 while Yvan Grant chipped in with 22 and Leniko Boucher, 20.
However, while all of the top six batsmen reached double figures, only Brathwaite made it past 25, as he held the innings together with a knock that lasted 194 balls and which included six fours.
Brathwaite put on 53 for the first wicket with Boucher, who faced 63 balls and counted two fours in his innings, before adding a further 33 for the second wicket with Grant who faced 28 balls.
Nichlolas Kirton (19) posted 31 with Brathwaite for the third wicket and Khalil Herbert (14) put on 32 for the fourth wicket with Brathwaite to keep the innings going.
However, Brathwaite was eventually fifth out, becoming one of spinner Jonathan Bootan’s three wickets for 43. Left-arm spinner Bryan Boodram supported with two for 38.
Earlier, T&T converted their overnight 312 for six into 371 all out, with Shatrughan Rambaran (20) and Joshua de Silva (18) rallying the lower order.
On Wednesday’s first day, Kirstan Kallicharan stroked 110 – his maiden Under-19 century – while Bryan Boodram (88), Cephas Cooper (59) and Dejourn Charles (51) all gathered half-centuries, to propel the T&T innings. All told, Kallicharan faced 149 deliveries in just over 3-3/4 hours at the crease and struck 13 fours.
