A two-vehicle smash-up, involving a Toyota Raum and a water delivery Canter truck yesterday morning at Sheriff Street has left four persons, including a toddler, injured.
Renaldo Pertab, driver of the Canter, sustained a broken hip and was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH). He was pinned in the vehicle and had to be rescued by the Guyana Fire Service. His wife Natasha Persaud and their two-year-old child Aman Pertab escaped with minor injuries and were treated and sent home.
The driver of the Toyota Raum, PMM 8646, whose identity was not immediately known, was taken to the Woodlands Hospital before being transferred to the GPH. His condition is listed as stable.
The accident occurred around 6.30 am. According to reports reaching Stabroek News, the driver of the Toyota Raum was proceeding south along Sheriff Street when he reportedly lost control and slammed into the Canter. Both vehicles were extensively damaged.
Speaking to this newspaper yesterday, Persaud related that she and Pertab were heading to a relative’s residence in Sophia to drop off Aman when tragedy struck. “We were driving good and suddenly the vehicle just slam into us, I don’t know if the driver did drunk or he lost control or what,” Persaud said.
She explained that she shouted for assistance and nearby residents managed to rescue her and Aman. The Fire Service had to be alerted to release her husband whose foot was pinned in the vehicle.
When this newspaper visited the scene, burst five gallon water bottles and glass from shattered windscreens were seen on the roadway. One resident only recalled hearing a loud impact. She said when she rushed to enquire what was happening, the two vehicles had already crashed into each other.
