A row between the Linden Mayor and Town Council and a man who constructed a washroom at the Wisroc car park has been settled.
Market Committee Chairman Rawle Friday told Stabroek News that the council decided to work with Ivan Barton and not fight against something which will more than likely benefit the town.
“It’s already erected and there is no need in trying to demolish something that is more of an asset than a liability to the [Town Council],” Friday said.
The council along with some market vendors had objected to the washroom being built because of the close proximity to some vendors and some environmental concerns.
When contacted, Barton said that there was an amicable resolution. “I am pleased that they have finally decided for us to work together because, in the end, all parties will benefit. It’s a win-win situation,” Barton asserted.
The washroom, which is located at the Wisroc-Amelia’s Ward car park, was built by Barton despite not getting the go-ahead from the council because of its location.
The washroom opened its door for business on May 1st and so far has been utilised by a lot of stall owners and taxi drivers.
“It wasn’t even fully completed, but still, patrons prefer to utilise it rather than go to the back of the market to use the town council own, which, at nights, is not safe due to lack of adequate lighting in a desolate area,” Barton said.
A number vendors of the Mackenzie Market, even those who were at first against the structure being erected at its current location, have since applauded the initiative of Barton, especially when comparing the two facilities.
“With the town council toilet, once water cut off you is have to fetch your own water to flush, whereas with the toilet in front Mr. Barton put up water tanks, so water shortage is not an issue, and the place is much cleaner than the council own.
Never mind his price being higher, the standard is what counts,” a pleased vendor said.
