An Airy Hall businessman was last Friday accused of stealing shop items from his mother.
Davendranauth Singh, 45, of Airy Hall Estate, Essequibo Coast, on Friday pleaded guilty to a charge that on July 25, at Charity, he stole two egg tray rations, two gas cylinders, a cooler, several gallons of cooking oil and others items, totaling to the sum of $45,600, from Drupattie Indra.
According to police prosecutor Deniro Jones, on July 25, at 5pm, Indra parked her truck with the items in front of her house and Singh arrived and stole them. Jones said that Indra reported the matter to the police and investigations were carried out and Singh was arrested.
However, according to Singh, he did not steal the items. On the day in question, he said, he was driving the truck and the items flew out of the vehicle. He said that the only thing he managed to recover was a cooler, which he claimed was his.
After Singh’s explanation, his plea of guilty was changed to not guilty.
Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan subsequently granted self-bail to Singh and the case was adjourned until August 4, when it will be called at the Suddie Magistrate’s Court.
