Charity labourer dies after hit by car at Maria’s Lodge

A 53-year-old man is now dead following an accident that occurred on Sunday at Maria’s Lodge, Essequibo Coast.

Dead is Lawrence Tang, a labourer of Charity Essequibo Coast.

According to the police, enquiries disclosed that Gavinendra Lall, 20, a farmer of Abrams Creek, Upper Pomeroon River, was driving his father’s car bearing number plate PSS 9926.

He was driving north in the western lane on the public road around 9.30 pm, when the bright lights from another car heading in the opposite direction caused him to dim his lights. When he switched on his bright lights again, he saw Tang a few feet away and could not apply brakes in time. He collided with Tang.

Tang was taken to the Charity Hospital by Lall and later transferred to the Suddie Public Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries at 10 am yesterday.

Speaking with this publication, Elizabeth Tang, the man’s sister, said she received a telephone call on Sunday night informing her of the accident. “At around 10.30, I got a call telling me that Lawrence was in an accident at Maria’s Delight. We were told that he was walking on the road when the car hit him and apparently he skated on the road because when I went to the hospital to see him, his head was seriously injured and all his hair from the one side was off and you could have seen his skull,” she said. “He was in a bad state and he was panting for breath.”

She said she was told that the driver and occupants of the car were under the influence of alcohol and the driver was taken into police custody.

Tang’s body is at the Suddie Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination and investigations are ongoing.
