A brutal attack on a woman by her estranged husband has left her nursing several wounds about her body and pleading for justice.
What began as a normal Sunday morning at La Penitence Market for 31-year-old Wanita Heeralall soon turned into a nightmare.
Speaking to Stabroek News from her hospital bed, Heeralall of Laing Avenue, West Ruimveldt stated that on Sunday she went to the market to do her usual shopping and ran into her estranged husband, Ishwaheir Heeralall, called ‘Buckman,’ with whom she has four children.
She said he told her that he had brought her son to see her and asked her to speak to the child, but the child said he didn’t want to talk to her so she told him to move away.
She said they moved off and she continued with her shopping.
However, her estranged husband later returned and grabbed her left arm demanding to speak to her, to which she responded no.
The unfavorable response resulted in Heeralall receiving several chops about her body, sustaining injuries to her forehead, both arms and her side.
“He chopped me two time on my left hand,” she said, “chop my forehead and was about to chop me again but I blocked it with my right hand.”
He then began to run but was chased by vendors and eventually apprehended.
Heeralall said she was collected after the incident by the police and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she is now a patient.
“We always had domestic problems and it is because of this that I chose to leave him. But he couldn’t accept that I left him and moved on with my life. He was after me all the time although we separated since last October,” she said.
She said the police had not yet visited her to take a statement, but she greatly desires that her estranged husband face the law for what he did to her.
“I’m tired of him chasing after me all the time,” she cried. “He use to beat me before, but I never really put him in any trouble but this time he has gone too far.”
