A taxi driver sustained injuries when the car he was driving collided with a parked truck along the Bagotville, West Bank Demerara Public Road around 5 am yesterday.
Carlos Griffith of Providence, East Bank Demerara, said to be in his 30s, was rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was treated and subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Pubic Hospital.
When this newspaper left the scene after 10 am yesterday, the car HC 2311, was still positioned halfway across the road.
The Canter truck, GGG 9529, that had been parked in the corner was also shifted from its spot on impact.
Residents lamented that the car was obstructing traffic in the already narrow road. They said they made several calls to the police but they had not immediately shown up to mark the spot and conduct investigations.
They said relatives of the driver had decided to do their own markings and were arranging to have the vehicle towed away when the police arrived.
The resident was awakened by the loud impact and ran out to investigate.
The door on the driver’s side was badly smashed in and several people pulled the driver out from the passenger’s side, the resident said. He was then placed in another car, which rushed him to the hospital.
According to the resident, it appeared that the car was heading in the direction of the Demerara Harbour Bridge and the driver might have fallen asleep.
