Dear Editor,
It was sheer pleasure last sunny Sunday afternoon to spend it at Edmonton Sports Club enjoying the Cheddi Jagan Memorial Cricket competition with close to one thousand Guyanese and para-Guyanese. The weather gods were kind this year, last year it was rained off. The right format – just ten overs per side – made for exciting (and short) matches.
At the end the Edmonton Amazonians won for a fourth time in the final against Commonwealth 1920 CC with Guyana United bringing third.
Prizes were presented by the new High Commissioner to the UK, Hamley Case who praised the unity and joy of the event.
As ever, honorary Guyanese Patsy Fagan and her team provided some lovely food from ‘back home’. Thankfully no vegetarian black pudding this year but plenty of duck curry! Faiyaz Ali and Morris Persaud provided the administrative backbone, as ever.
All in all, a great day for the families who attended in their droves. One lacuna -the public information system on the progress of the matches and competition was inadequate. That needs addressing.
But, overall, well done all. A great day.
Yours faithfully,
John Mair
