West Indies Under-16 spinner Ashmead Nedd says he has worked hard towards achieving his maiden call up to the Regional side and now plans to showcase his skills come next week when he departs for the England limited overs youth invitational tournament.
Nedd, along with Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) and national teammates; pacer Qumar Torrington and dynamic 14-year-old opener Sachin Singh received golden opportunities recently when they were selected to represent the Windies youth side against some of the top English U16 teams from August 10 to 21.
When Stabroek Sport contacted Nedd yesterday, it was evident that being chosen to play for the West Indies who will then venture into English conditions to play the home team was something the left-arm spinner was relishing.
“It means a lot to me because of all the hard word I’ve putting in over the years and.my bowling has been going good over the past few years too, especially playing for Guyana, DCC club cricket and in the junior cricket”.
Son of former national off-spinner and current National U17 coach Garvin Nedd, Ashmead has been more of a bowling all-rounder than he has been just an normal spinner, scoring hundreds at the club level whilst showing that he is also capable of notching up good scores not just in the local arena but regionally as well.
When quizzed about if he will be working on becoming a full-fledged all-rounder during his English stint, Nedd was keen on admitting that weighing in in both departments was somewhat of his general aim whenever he plays.
“Yes I’m looking to establish myself as an all-rounder whenever I get the opportunity to go out there and play. During this tournament I will be aiming for about 200 runs along with 12 wickets in the games we play,” he declared.
The Guyana U15 title winning captain, apart from being overly happy about his own personal upcoming endeavours, was pleased to have the company of his friends and good advice from his father Coach Nedd.
“It feels great to have some of my teammates and club mates with me and the advice from my father would usually just tell me to play normal cricket, have fun, stick to the basics and be disciplined at all times.”
